The useful answer is not a single number or a blanket promise. A wireless alarm system fits a project when the devices, building layout, radio path, maintenance plan and reporting requirement are considered together. Q1. How far can a wireless alarm device communicate?

In a real building, the useful question is: what sits between the device and the Hub? A small shop may have metal shutters, display shelves and a back-room counter. Those conditions can change where the Hub should be placed and which device positions need extra checking.

Q2. How long do wireless alarm detector batteries last?

For applicable Roombanker battery-powered devices, a typical planning range is two to five years, depending on the device and conditions. The number changes because devices do different jobs: a door contact, PIR, siren, keypad or environmental sensor may have different power needs and event frequency.

The project judgement is simple: do not compare systems only by the largest battery-life claim. Ask which devices are battery powered, where they will be installed, how often they are expected to trigger, whether temperature or signal conditions are demanding, and how low-battery maintenance will be handled.

For a rental apartment, battery access may matter because the device must be serviced without damaging finishes. For a small shop, a frequently used entrance contact may need a more practical maintenance plan than a rarely used back-room point. Battery life is therefore part of the service design, not just a line in a datasheet.

Q3. Is wireless alarm as reliable as wired alarm?

Wireless and wired systems can both be professional choices, but they are reliable for different reasons and fail in different ways. The right choice depends on the building, not on a slogan.

Wired alarm is often attractive when cable routes already exist, the building is still under construction, or the customer accepts visible or concealed wiring work. It reduces dependence on radio propagation, but the installation still depends on cable protection, terminations, power, future building work and access for maintenance.

Wireless alarm is often attractive in finished spaces, rented properties, shops that cannot close for long, or homes where wall chasing would create too much disruption. It avoids many cable routes, but the installer must take radio path, Hub position, device mounting and battery maintenance seriously.

So the first decision is not “wired or wireless is always more reliable.” It is:

  • If clean wiring already exists and the customer accepts the work, wired may be efficient.
  • If the building is finished, cabling is disruptive, or phased expansion is likely, wireless may be the better project route.
  • If the radio path is difficult, wireless still needs careful survey and final-position verification.

Q4. Is wireless installation faster than wired installation?

Wireless installation can be faster because it reduces cable pulling, wall chasing, trunking, drilling routes and cable termination work. That matters in a finished shop, apartment or high-end residence where disruption is part of the cost.

But faster hardware placement is not the whole installation. The installer still has to choose the protected points, mount devices correctly, pair or configure them, test triggers, check signals, confirm siren or reporting behaviour and explain the result to the customer.

The practical judgement is this: wireless can reduce construction work, but it should not reduce commissioning discipline. If the site is simple and the protected points are clear, wireless may shorten the project. Q5. What does a professional wireless alarm system cost?

A useful price comparison starts with equal protection scope. If one quote includes the Hub, keypad, sirens, door contacts, PIRs, reporting setup, installation, testing and after-sales support, and another quote lists only hardware, the lower number may not represent the lower project cost.

Compare quotations in layers:

  • Protected points: how many doors, windows, movement areas, outdoor points and staff action points are actually covered?
  • Device roles: does the quote include the right detector type for each area, or only the cheapest device count?
  • Installation and commissioning: are mounting, pairing, signal checks, trigger tests and handover included?
  • Reporting and service: is ARC reporting, app setup, maintenance or future support part of the scope?
  • Expansion: what happens if the customer adds a stockroom, office, garage or second entrance later?

Q6. Can wireless alarms be hacked or jammed?

Treat unauthorised access and RF jamming as two separate risks. Unauthorised access is about whether someone can reach, control or use a system without permission. Jamming is deliberate radio interference intended to disrupt wireless communication. Ordinary wireless interference can also happen without a deliberate attacker, for example from the surrounding signal environment.

The customer judgement is different for each risk. For access risk, the buyer should ask what the selected system, app, account and installer process do to control who can configure or operate the system. That belongs in the product security and account-control evidence for the selected system, not in a generic wireless range discussion.

Q7. Will pets trigger wireless motion detectors?

Pets can affect PIR detection when their body movement changes the infrared pattern seen by the detector. The key decision is not only the pet’s weight; it is the detector type, mounting position, lens pattern, room layout and the pet’s real movement path.

In a home, a pet that can climb furniture or move on stairs may enter parts of the detection pattern that a floor-level pet would not. That is why pet questions should be handled with the selected detector’s own installation guidance, not a generic number. First-party PIR installation documents commonly tie pet behaviour to detector mounting, expected movement path, stairs, nearby objects and sources such as windows, heat or airflow.

For the installer, the first step is to ask where the pet actually moves and whether that path crosses the detector’s active area. Then choose the detector and mounting position for that room, with the PIR facing the intended entrance path or activity area rather than a blank wall or the wrong side of the door. The final answer comes from the selected model’s documentation and a test in the installed position, not from a universal pet-weight number.

Q8. How much maintenance does a wireless alarm system need?

Maintenance is more than replacing batteries. The customer should know which changes can be observed day to day, and which checks belong to the installer.

Customers may notice obvious signs: low-battery warnings where supported, a device being physically moved, an app or gateway offline indication, a siren that is not heard during a test, or a door/window contact that no longer lines up after building work. Those are triggers to ask for a check; they are not a complete maintenance programme by themselves.

Installer checks are more structured. They may include confirming device status, checking batteries or power, testing protected openings and movement areas, verifying local alarm output, reviewing signal behaviour, and confirming that reporting paths still match the customer’s service arrangement.

The practical judgement: wireless reduces cabling maintenance, but it increases the importance of device condition, battery planning, signal path and configuration records. If the site changes, the system should be checked even if no device has failed yet.

Q9. Can I expand a wireless alarm system after installation?

Expansion has two different meanings. Adding one more compatible device to an existing protected area is not the same as expanding the protected scope of the whole site.

If a shop adds one extra door contact to a back-room door, the installer checks compatibility, Hub capacity, mounting position, signal path and whether that opening belongs to the existing alarm logic. If the same shop adds a new stockroom, office or external entrance, the installer is no longer just adding a device; the protection plan, user control, local warning and reporting expectations may also change.

Ask four questions before saying “yes”:

  • Does the Hub support the added device type and required capacity?
  • Does the new device have a stable path from its final position to the Hub?
  • Does the new area change arming modes, user permissions or alarm behaviour?
  • Does the reporting or service arrangement need to include the new zone?

Wireless can make phased projects easier, but expansion still needs design. A quick add-on should not create a blind spot, a confusing zone name or an untested reporting path.

Q10. What happens if the internet goes down?

In a Roombanker system, if site broadband goes down but power remains normal, detector triggering can still make the Hub and siren perform the local alarm. That local alarm behaviour is different from remote app visibility or ARC reporting.

If the gateway has no available network at all, RB Link App shows the gateway and all devices offline. In this situation, the App’s offline display does not mean that local alarm operation has stopped. It means the app cannot see the gateway and device status through an available network path.

If a usable cellular network is available, the gateway automatically switches and continues App communication and ARC reporting. The installer should explain these three states clearly during handover: local alarm, app visibility and reporting path are related, but they are not the same layer.

Q11. Will insurance companies accept wireless alarms?

Insurance acceptance depends on the actual policy or insurer requirement, the country, risk level, property type, required standard, installed design and documentation. The useful answer is not simply “wireless is accepted” or “wireless is rejected.”

The installer should ask the customer to obtain any insurance requirement before final system selection. If the insurer requires a certain standard, monitoring arrangement, installation record or certificate, the quotation should be built around that requirement from the start. One device certificate may not answer the whole-system requirement.

If the customer has no stated insurance requirement, that still does not make the alarm system an insurance guarantee. It means the installer should design for the customer’s risk and keep the project documentation clear, while the customer confirms acceptance with the relevant insurer if insurance recognition matters.

Q12. Can a wireless alarm report to an Alarm Receiving Centre?

For the customer, the key point is that ARC reporting is not only a product checkbox. The installer or integrator must confirm the receiving format, account setup, network path, event types and test requirement with the selected ARC. A system may have the right protocol support, but the project still needs the receiver side to be configured and tested.

If ARC reporting matters, decide it before handover. It affects quotation, network planning, commissioning evidence and the customer’s expectation of who receives alarm events.

Q13. Can wireless detectors be used outdoors?

Only outdoor-suitable detectors should be used outdoors. Indoor detectors belong indoors, even if a location looks sheltered. Outdoor detection adds weather exposure, sunlight, temperature changes, mounting security, tamper exposure, field of view and maintenance access.

The selection question is: what outdoor risk is being detected? A driveway, external wall, shop front, courtyard and factory yard are different scenes. They may contain different target paths, non-target activity, sunlight, rain exposure, public access and mounting constraints.

The installer should first confirm that the exact detector model is intended for outdoor use. Then plan where a person would enter or cross the protected area, what normal movement should be ignored, whether the detector can be mounted securely, and whether it can be maintained after installation. Outdoor selection is therefore a detector-role and site-exposure decision, not just “put a sensor outside.”

Q14. What is the lifespan of a wireless alarm system?

There is no single useful year count for every wireless alarm system, because hardware life, battery service, spare-part availability, software or app support, reporting arrangements and building changes are different questions. These layers age and change at different speeds.

A detector may only need battery service while the device remains healthy. A physically damaged detector or siren may need inspection, repair or replacement. A shop remodel may require re-positioning and re-testing devices without meaning the hardware itself has reached end of life. A change from local-only use to ARC reporting may change the service design even if the devices still operate.

The installer should recommend inspection when batteries become frequent service items, devices are moved or damaged, the building layout changes, reporting requirements change, or replacement parts and support affect long-term maintainability. Repair, re-positioning, re-testing or replacement should then follow the actual device condition and project requirement. Treat lifespan as a maintenance decision, not as one universal number.

Q15. Is wireless alarm suitable for rental properties?

Wireless alarm can be a strong option for rental properties because it may reduce cabling work and support a more flexible device layout. That helps when the tenant or owner wants protection without major construction.

The project still needs permission, correct mounting and a plan for what happens when the tenant leaves or the site changes. A door contact must still align correctly. A PIR must still face the entrance path or activity area. A Hub still needs a practical indoor position with power and communication access.

For a rented apartment or small shop, the useful first step is to list protected doors, windows and movement areas, then decide which points can be installed cleanly, removed responsibly if needed, and re-tested after any relocation. Wireless makes the discussion easier, but it does not remove the need to verify the final installed position.
